LPG Carriers

LPG is something which is present in almost each and every households of India now. Thanks to Government’s Initiative and OMC’s agressive approach which make it possible in just 5-6 years. In FY 22-23, the domestic production of LPG went up by 14% but at the same time, import share went up to 64% which was 49% six years back. So, when major chunks are coming from outside, then it’s pertinent to know the medium thru which it is getting imported.

Major countries involve in exporting LPG are Saudi Arabia, Qatar, US and Algeria and India is getting its portion mainly thru sea routes. So, here are the types of Gas Carriers which are in use to supply LPG (Butane, Propane) and other products like Ammonia, Ethylene etc. within region and outside region-

1. Coasters – Size less than 15000cbm and used for short and medium haul routes.

2. Handy Gas Carrier (HGC)- Size between 15000-25000cbm and used for short and medium haul routes.

3. Mid-Size Gas Carrier (MGC)- Size between 25000-50000cbm and used for intra-regional and medium haul routes.

4. Large Gas Carrier (LGC)- Size between 50000-70000cbm and used for long routes where VLGC can’t enter.

5. Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC)- Size between 70000-125000cbm and used for long routes.

#Interesting Fact- HARZAND is the World’s Largest VLGC (size 230m long and 36.6m broad). It is equivalent to 2.08 acres of land. What a beauty 😍.
